A Moment in Fashion History: Naomi Sims

1969
Nowadays there are so many young girls (and even those late 20something that are considered old as hell in the modeling world) that have a dream of becoming a super model. Young Women line up for there chance to become Tyra's Americas Next Top Model and even though it still seems like a dream job that's more attainable than in the past its hard as hell to get your big break in modeling.

Every arena has its trailblazers and in honor of black history month I want to take a moment to salute Naomi Sims. Born in Oxford Mississippi ( Just a few hours away from the small town my family is from) =}  Naomi later moved out East and attending the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City while taking courses in Psychology at night. She received her first big break by stepping out and making her own connections with famous photographer Gosta Peterson. From there she got her own work using the up-and-coming Wilhelmina Modeling company as a contact.

Naomi is truly an inspiring women, not just because I love her name  ;-) but mainly because she encompassed everything I think a women should be; beautiful and intelligent, She took control of her life from a young age and even though she was awkward and teased for being 5'10 by the age of 13 she made her life a true success.. How many people do you know that are still holding on to things from their childhood?? Are you still holding on to insecurities? Her life could have gone in any direction and he chose for it to be a positive one.

Ms. Sims was later referred to as the one of the most savy business women in the fashion industry. She was also an author and published lots of writing on healthy beauty and black women in business.
The Cover that Sims says started her career

Sims passed on at the young age of 61 but I must say that I have really enjoyed reading about her today. She is truly inspiring and I am happy to share her name. With GODs grace this Naomi will be just as successfully in my endeavors and can take time in my years to inspire those that that I touch.. The moral of the story is dream big and go for it!! Whatever "it" may be.

Peace ~ Love
Muah!
